Congratulations to Lisa Wegner for recently being selected as a true Champion for
Children. During the month of June, The NEST: Four Corners Child Advocacy Center
received nominations from the community for an individual, in the Four Corners Region,
who has made a difference in the lives of children. This honor was announced at the
Champion for Children Celebration held at Let It Grow Nursery on Friday, July 16th.  

Lisa Wegner has recently retired from her position as the Executive Director of
Southwest Board of Cooperative Services. Lisa received several nominations from
community members. Each nomination included a supporting narrative which described
the nominee’s character and activities relevant to the submission.  Lisa Wegner was
described as setting the bar for integrity, honor, compassion and service in her work as
an advocate for children and adults with disabilities. The following are just a few of the
comments that describe Lisa as a Champion for Children:

  • Lisa has worked in the field of Special Education for 32 years; as a special             
    education teacher, special education director, and Southwest Board of
    Cooperative Services Executive Director.
  • Has held positions on several non-profit organizations Board of Directors.
  • Is extremely active in her church community.
  • Has been described as having a unique and powerful leadership style and being a
    true visionary.
  • Is honest and her integrity is of the highest standard.
  • Helps children achieve their full potential.
  • Has been involved in numerous activities that improve education and services at
    the state level.
  • Actively involved in early childhood, Child-Find, Response to Intervention and
    transition service for students up to age 21.
  • Helped to improve the head-start program in Towaoc.
  • Implemented Language for Learning.
  • Helped form the Southwest Autism Team

The Champion for Children Celebration was a fundraising event to support the
intervention and prevention of Child Abuse in Four Corners Region of Colorado. The
event was held in the beautiful garden of Let It Grow Nursery, who graciously provided
most of the food for the evening.   Additional contributions came from Blondie’s,
Pepperhead, Stonefish, and West Slope Liquors, as well as the lovely musical talent of
Linda Carter. The NEST appreciates all who contributed and came out to celebrate this
year’s Champion for Children.
